Au milieu du fleuve, la mère de famille répand les cendres dans l’eau. A group of people is in a boat travelling along Mekong River that stretches along the Thai-Laos border. They are running against the wind, anticipating a farewell. In the middle of the river, the lady head of the family casts the ashes off into the stream. Um grupo de pessoas viaja num barco ao longo do rio Mekong, na fronteira entre Tailândia e Laos. Viajam contra o vento, antecipando uma despedida. Luminous People is a recreation of an event to commemorate the presence of the dead and the decayed memories of the living, of filmmaking. Apichatpong and his crew travelled to Nong Khai, a small town near Mekong River, and recruited local villagers to participate in the project. For two days while on the boat, the crew and cast reconstructed a fake ceremony and find a narrative. Later, some of the crewmembers watched the footage and their conversations were recorded. During the process, one of them reprised a story of his dead father who came to visit him in his dream. Apichatpong asked him to sing for the film. Luminous People est la reconstitution d’une cérémonie qui célèbre la présence des morts et les mémoires décadentes des vivants, du cinéma. Apichatpong Weerasethakul et son équipe se sont rendus à Nong Khai, une petite ville située à proximité du fleuve Mekong, et ont invité les habitants de cette localité à participer au projet. Pendant les deux journées qu’ils passèrent sur le bateau, l’équipe et les acteurs ont reconstitué une cérémonie inventée et élaboré un récit. Plus tard, certains membres de l’équipe se sont réunis pour visionner les images et leurs conversations ont été enregistrées. Apichatpong Weerasethakul was born in 1970 in Bangkok. He has a degree in Architecture from Khon Kaen University and a Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has become one of the few filmmakers in Thailand who have worked outside the strict Thai studio system. He has earned a wide recognition through his art projects and feature films that received several awards, including two prizes from the Cannes Film Festival. In 2005, Apichatpong was presented with a prestigious Silpatorn Award from the Thailand’s Ministry of Culture. Apichatpong is currently working on a new feature, Intimacy, a part of New Crowned Hope film projects to celebrate Mozart’s 250th anniversary, commissioned by the city of Vienna. est né en 1970 à Bangkok. Artiste et cinéaste indépendant, il accède à une reconnaissance internationale grâce à la sélection de ses films Blissfully Yours (2002) et Tropical Malady (2004) au Festival de Cannes. Depuis, il a réalisé Syndromes and A Century présenté au Festival de Venise en 2006. Weerasethakul a aussi réalisé plusieurs courts métrage et participé à de beaucoup d’expositions dans le monde. nasceu em 1970 em Bangkok. Apichatpong tornou-se num dos poucos cineastas na Tailândia a trabalhar fora do rígido sistema de estúdios tailandês. Premiado duas vezes no Festival de Cannes, recebeu em 2005 o prestigiado Silpatorn Award atribuído pelo Ministério da Cultura tailandês. Actualmente está a trabalhar no filme “Intimacy”, para o projecto New Crowned Hope, encomenda da cidade de Viena para a celebração dos 250 anos do nascimento de Mozart.
